LED TV Teardown and Repair

LED TV at home seems to be not turning ON(sometimes after a long time after power on). Opened it up troubleshooted the issue to power board section on the TV. No output voltage from the board to the Panel or the processing section. Input AC section seems to OK. No visible blown parts on board either. Trying to debug the root cause of the issue on the power board. Maybe a shorted cap or a faulty MOSFET? Still no idea. Debugging unknown circuits is fun. 😀

Even if you are not able to fix it, you will learn a lot.

Heat Dissipation via Battery Charging

The image shows the heat dissipation caused by a 10W battery charging circuit without a heatsink or forced cooling. Thermal management is a must in designs. Always follow the datasheet during layouts for the best thermal performance. Here dissipation is mostly via thermal vias and a large ground plane.

Thermal cameras will help you isolate thermal issues in your high-current boards.

Pro-tip for PCB designers: Never Ever give thermal relief for thermal vias. You will reduce the thermal dissipation with those reliefs. Folks usually miss this in design due to the usual habit of creating vias with thermal reliefs.
